FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team (6-3, 0-2 SSC) will play its final home game of the 2011 calendar year Tuesday, Dec. 13, hosting the No. 24 Shaw Bears (1-1) at the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center. The teams will tip-off at 7 p.m.

The Sharks are looking to snap a two-game losing skid, having been defeated by Barry and Eckerd to open Sunshine State Conference play. Travelling to St. Petersburg, Fla. Saturday to take on Eckerd, the Sharks were challenged to cool off the Tritons, currently ranked second in the conference. The game was a close affair late in the first half, but runs of 13-0 and 15-1 helped Eckerd pull away from the Sharks and take a 71-55 victory.

Turnovers seemed to doom the Sharks Saturday, committing 23, their second-highest total of the season. NSU also struggled from the free throw line, converting only 56 percent (14-25) of its attempts, despite shooting 69 percent on the season. The Sharks will need to improve in both categories against the Bears, an NCAA Division II Final Four team last season.

Shaw, picked to finished atop the CIAA in the preseason, has played a light schedule to date, taking the court only twice since opening the season Nov. 26. The Bears opened play at Belmont Abbey, picking up a 55-49 victory. No. 19 Tusculum knocked off Shaw two days later, 68-61.

The Bears are led on offense by Brittany Ransom with 16 points per game, including a 22 point performance against Tusculum. On the glass, Aslea Williams is grabbing 11 boards per contest for Shaw.

In six meetings between the Sharks and Bears, NSU has been victorious four times. After Shaw won the first two meetings in the 2005-06 season, NSU has won four straight, including a 74-72 victory at the NSU Arena last season. The Dec. 30, 2010 matchup was a back-and-forth battle with six lead changes and six ties, but the Sharks were able to create enough cushion late to hold off Shaw’s final charge.
